(kuva 14_a) Eräs yhteinen unelmamme toteutui Portlandissa: näimme suuresti diggailemamme Alice In Chains-orkesterin livenä! Halusimme keikan jälkeisenä sunnuntaina nähdä telkusta moottoripyöräkisoja, jotka eivät täällä näy kuin yhdellä kanavalla, mikä vei meidät Kelly´s Olympic-nimiseen baariin Portlandin keskustassa.
Paikan biker-henkisyydestä ei juuri jäänyt epäilystä, sillä omistajan intohimoisesti entisöimiä klassikkopyöriä oli ripustettu komeisiin riveihin paikan kattoon!
(picture 14_a) Our common dream, to see Alice In Chains, a band we´ve both loved for years, live on stage, was finally realized in Portland! On the Sunday after the gig, we wanted to see some motorcycle-races on TV, but here they are only broadcast on one channel, and this lead us to a bar called Kelly´s Olympic in downtown Portland. There was little doubt about the bar´s biker-orientation, because rows of classic bikes, passionately renovated by the owner, were hanging on the ceiling!
(kuva 14_b) Navigaattoria ei tälläkään kertaa ole matkassa, mutta suunnistaminen ei USA:ssa ole erityisen vaikeaa, sillä opastekylttejä on riittävästi, ja ne tuntevat kartoista löytyvät tiennumerot. On tosin syytä olla perillä ilmansuunnista, koska niihin viitataan usein, ja lisäksi kyltit voivat joskus olla pieniä ja sijaita melkeinpä juuri risteysten kohdalla, joista pitäisi kääntyä, joten varsinkin kaupunkiajossa niitä voi olla vaikea havaita hyvissä ajoin. Eksyksissä ei silti ole tarvinnut kovin usein olla, ja aina löytyy joku, jolta kysyä tietä.
(picture 14_b) Like previous trips, we do not have a navigator with us, but finding your way in the US does not seem to be a problem, because signage is plentiful, and signs always know the road numbers, that are found on maps. You do need to be aware of the different directions, like north & south, because the signs often refer to them, and signs themselves may sometimes be very small, and be located almost directly at the junction, where you need to turn, so especially in city traffic they can be hard to spot in time. But we havent been lost many times, and even if we have, there´s always someone to ask for directions.
(kuva 15) Upeat kelit jatkuivat Portlandiin asti. Sieltä Seattlen suuntaan jatkettaessa seurasi totaalinen muutos, kun ilmavirtaus kääntyi Kanadan suuntaan, ja maan luoteiskulmasta tuli muutamassa päivässä jopa suomalaisen mittapuun mukaan talvisen kylmä (eikä tämä kylmyys hellittänyt ainakaan 2 viikkoon, se vain pikemminkin kiristi otettaan, ja mm. monet hiihtokeskukset avasivat kautensa ennätysaikaisin).
Äärimmäisen mutkainen pikkutiereitti kiersi St Helensin tulivuoren itäpuolelta, ja tarjoili hienoja maisemia tämän vuonna 1980 äkillisesti ja tuhoisasti purkautuneen jättiläisen suuntaan. Alueella on muitakin tulivuoria, mm. Mount Rainier, ja näiden lähistöllä näkyy mahdollisen uuden purkauksen varalta evakuontireittien opastetauluja.
(picture 15) Our great luck with the weather lasted until Portland. Going from there to Seattle, a total change took place, when winds started to blow from Canada, and northwestern part of US turned wintry cold, even for us Finns (and this cold was going to stay at least 2 weeks, in fact it just tightened its grip, and several ski centers had record-early openings). An extremely curvy route of small roads went around the eastern side of Mt. St Helens, offering excellent views to this volcano, which in 1980 had a catastrophic sudden eruption. There are other volcanoes, like Mount Rainier in the area, and close to the volcanoes, you see the signs for evacuation routes to be used, if another eruption happens.
