(picture 10) In California´s northern coasts, there are thick forests with mighty redwoods, that can grow over 300 ft high. A Finnish biker, in the middle of the picture, shrinks among them so that she looks almost nonexistent!
(kuvat 11,12,13) Valtatiet 1 ja 101 vuorottelevat pitkin Kalifornian pohjoisrannikkoa. Oregoniin päästyä tarjolla on enää 101 tai kauempana sisämaassa kulkeva nopea, mutta tylsä Interstate 5. Juuri tämä osa rannikosta oli maisemiltaan ehkäpä dramaattisin (ja lisäksi täällä sumu ei kiusannut niin usein kuin etelämpänä). Loputtomiin pitkiä hiekkarantoja, ja niille murtuvia mahtavia aaltoja, korkeita kallioita ja tuuheita havumetsiä. Myös tie oli moottoripyöräilyä ajatellen lähellä täydellistä, vaikkei eteneminen ollutkaan kovin ripeää. USA:ssa tuntuu olevan tapana ilmoittaa nopeussuositus jokaista vähänkin tiukempaa kurvia varten, ja tällä reitillä 20mph/25mph/30mph taulut olivat tavallisia.
(pictures 11,12,13) Highways 1 and 101 take turns in California´s northern parts, but in Oregon, if you want to follow the coast, 101 is usually your only choice. Further inland there is Interstate 5, which is fast, but boring. In this part of the coast, the fog wasnt constantly a problem, so for us, this was probably the most dramatic part of the whole coastline. Endless sandy beaches, with massive ocean waves crashing on to them, high cliffs and thick coniferous forests. Also the road was close to perfect for motorcycles, even though it was quite slow-going. It seems common in the US to put a recommendation of speed before each tighter turn, and on this route, there were many 20mph/25mph/30mph signs.
