(kuva 03_a) 16.9. aamulla valmiina lähtemään ajoreissullemme Los Angelesista. Tässä ASMC:n päämajan edessä Breassa. Vasemmalla Jim Kirkland, jota meidän on pitkälti kiittäminen siitä, että moottoripyörä järjestyi allemme USA:sta (alunperin suunnitelmana oli rahdata oma moottoripyörämme Suomesta USA:n itärannikolle, ja lähteä matkaan sieltä). Jim ajaa sattumoisin miltei samanlaisella DL650:llä kuin millä me olemme reissullemme lähdössä (Jimin pyörä on musta, ´meidän´ on oranssi). Jimin pyörässä näkyville alumiinilaukuille meilläkin olisi ollut käyttöä, ja meillä löytyykin sellaiset Suomessa, mutta emme voineet alkaa raahaamaan niitä mukana lentokoneessa, siksi on pärjäiltävä epäkäytännöllisillä kangassivulaukuilla ja lukittavalla muovisella takalaukulla. Lisäksi löytyy julmetun isokokoinen tankkilaukku.
(picture 03_a) The morning of September 16th, and we are getting ready to leave Los Angeles for our mc-trip. This is in front of the ASMC headquarters in Brea. On the left is Jim Kirkland, American Suzuki´s director of technical service, and it is largely thanks to him that we were able to find a suitable bike from the US (originally our plan was to freight our own bike from Finland to the east coast of the US, and start off from there). Jim also rides a DL650, which is almost similar to the bike that we´re about to start our trip with (Jim´s bike is black, ´ours´ is orange). He has practical aluminium sidecases on the bike, and we also have these in Finland, but could not take them with us to the airplane, so we are using soft panniers, which are a bit of a headache to use. We do have one lockable plastic topcase on the back, plus a very big tank-bag.
(kuva 03_b) Jim lähti opastamaan meidät Los Angelesista Santa Monicaan, josta Tyynenmeren rannikkoa seuraileva Highway 1 alkaa. Varsinainen aamuruuhka oli jo ohi, mutta jättiläiskaupunkia halkovilla 8-12 kaistaisilla moottoriteillä oli silti liikennettä melko reippaasti. Ilmeisesti osin juuri tukkoisen liikenteensä takia kaupunki on saanut hauskan lisänimen ´Hell A´...! Näimme ohimennen myös Los Angelesin ydinkeskustan pilvenpiirtäjiä, sekä legendaarisen Hollywood-tekstin korkealla kukkuloiden päällä.
(picture 03_b) Jim escorted us out of LA, and into Santa Monica, where the Highway 1, that follows the Pacific coast, begins. The morning rush-hour was already gone, but there was still quite a bit of traffic in the 8-12 lane freeways, that cut through this giant city. Due to the congestion in traffic, some call it ´Hell A´...! We also saw a glimpse of the skyscrapers in downtown LA, and the legendary Hollywood-sign high up on the hills.
(kuva 04) Ajoreissumme 2 ensimmäistä viikkoa meitä helli kerrassaan loistava keli. Koko matkan Kalifornian halki ja pitkälle Oregoniin taivas oli täysin pilvetön, ja lämmöt sisämaassa päivisin yli 30C. Aivan rannan tuntumassa vallitsi kuitenkin ihan oma ´mikroilmasto´, sillä meren viileys ja sisämaan kuumuus aikaansaivat paksun sumun, joka ulottui tuskin kilometrin matkaa mereltä, mutta peitti kuitenkin hienot merinäköalat melko täydellisesti. Sumun sisällä oli myös jopa viileää ajaa, ja ajoittain kosteus tiivistyi tienpintaan, mikä ei ollut kiva juttu reitillä, joka oli täynnä toinen toistaan tiukempia kurveja. Joskus sumu hävisi yhtäkkiä, ja toisinaan se saattoi pysytellä paikallaan koko päivän.
(picture 04) The first 2 weeks of our tour, we had terrific weather. All the way through California, and long way on to Oregon the sky was cloudless, and inland daytime temperatures exceeded 30C. Right on the shoreline, however, there was another ´micro-climate´. because the cool sea and inland heat gave birth to a dense fog, which extended maybe not even 1 kilometre inland, but still covered the fine ocean views almost thoroughly. Inside the fog it was also quite chilly to ride, and sometimes its humidity condensed onto the road surface, which wasnt nice at all, because the whole route was extremely curvy. Sometimes the fog lifted all the sudden, and sometimes it stayed there the whole day.
(kuva 05) Cambrian lähellä, korkean kukkulan päällä muutaman kilometrin sisämaahan - mutta upealla merinäköalalla - sijaitsee Hearst Castle, lehtimoguli William Randolph Hearstin 1919-1947 rakennuttama mahtipontinen ´ranch´. Hearst oli matkustanut nuoruudessaan paljon mm. Euroopassa, ja nämä vaikutteet näkyvät paikan arkkitehtuurissa selvästi. Täällä hän kestitsi mm. Winston Churchillia, ja lukuisia Hollywood-kuuluisuuksia, esim. Clark Gablea ja Charles Chaplinia. Hearstilla oli täällä jopa oma eläintarha, ja alueella vaeltaa yhä näiden eläinten jälkeläisinä esimerkiksi seeproja.
(picture 05) Near Cambria, right on top of a big hill a few miles inland - but with gorgeous views to the ocean - lies Hearst Castle, a sort of ´ranch´ built between 1919-1947 by William Randolph Hearst, a media mogul of his time. Hearst had travelled in Europe, when he was young, and this has clearly influenced the architecture of his castle. Among the guests were, for example, Winston Churchill, and numerous Hollywood-stars like Clark Gable and Charles Chaplin. Hearst even had his very own zoo, and the descendants of these animals, like zebras, still roam the area.
