4-6 lokakuuta (4-6 Oct) 2009

(kuva 20) Takaisin Kaliforniassa, törmäsimme huoltoasemalla näin hienosti entisöityyn Nevadan liikennepoliisin virka-autoon.

(picture 20) Back in California, at a gas stop we saw this impeccably renovated Nevada Highway Patrol police car.

(kuva 21) Sierra Nevadan länsipuolisilla rinteillä kiemurtelevan valtatie 49:n varrella oli useita historiallisia kaupunkeja kultaryntäyksen ajoilta. Tien varrelta löytyi myös tämä ´saluuna´.

(picture 21) We followed Hwy 49, which curves nicely along the western side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. In the area, there are many historical towns from the gold rush era. We also saw this ´saloon´ along the road.

(picture 22) In our search for warmer weather, we ended up almost returning back to Los Angeles, then turned east, so we followed the legendary Route 66 for some time. This highway between Chicago and LA was over 3000km long, and it has been called "the main street of America" and "mother road". Interstate-highways of today have moved this road to history, but short parts of it still exist.

(picture 23) Trucks, most of which are of this long-nose type that you seldom see in Europe, are the kings of the highway in the US. It seems they do not have speed limiters (like ours do) and it is better to go at a fair speed on the highways, otherwise you will be constantly passed by trucks, and that doesn´t feel safe, even though truck drivers are very courteous.

(kuva 24) Mojaven autiomaassa lähellä Las Vegasia on varsin kuivaa. Eräs harvoista asioista, joita siellä kasvaa, ovat nämä U2:n kuuluisalle levyllekin nimensä lainanneet joshua-puut.

(picture 24) The Mojave desert, near Las Vegas, is a very dry place. One of the few things that grow there, are these joshua-trees, which have borrowed their name for the album by the famous rock band U2.
