(kuva 42) Arizonan tunnetuimman nähtävyyden, valtavan Grand Canyonin eteläreunalla.

(picture 42) A view from the south rim of the huge Grand Canyon, Arizona´s most famous touristic attraction.

(kuva 43) Colorado-joki, joka on vuosimiljoonien aikana kaivertanut tämän kanjonin, virtaa sen pohjalla melkein 2 kilometriä alempana. Kanjonin seinämillä on nähtävissä kivikerrostumia, jotka vanhenevat alaspäin mentäessä; joen tasalla olevat ovat arviolta 2 miljardin vuoden ikäisiä. Kanjonin mitat ovat muutenkin vaikuttavia: pituutta kanjonilla on yli 400 km, ja leveyttä paikasta riippuen 6,5 - 29 km. Pohjoisreunalle on tietä pitkin yhden kohtalaisen rankan ajopäivän mittainen matka!

(picture 43) Colorado River has carved the canyon into the rock during millions of years, and now it meanders at the bottom of it, over 1 mile below. On the walls of the canyon, the rock types get older as they descent into the river; on its level the rock is about 2 billion years old. The dimensions of the canyon are impressive, too: it is over 270 miles long, and depending on the place, 4-18 miles wide. To get to the north rim by road requires a full day´s ride! The north rim is a bit higher than the south rim that we visited, and gets a snow cover more frequently during the winter.

(kuva 44) Yhteiskuva Grand Canyonilla.

(picture 44) The two of us at the Grand Canyon.

(kuva 45) Tämä Harrikka laittoikin ihan kerrasta uusiksi käsitteen ´moottoripyörän sarvet´!

(picture 45) This Harley truly redefined the meaning of a ´bike´s horns´!

(kuva 46) Näkymä Grand Canyonin itäpäästä. Huomaa kaveri seisoskelemassa kallion päällä kuvan alaosassa.

(picture 46) A view from the eastern end of the Canyon. Note the guy standing on top of the rocks at the lower part of the photo.

(kuva 47) Kanjonin eteläreunaa seurailevalta tieltä avautui usein hienoja näköaloja massiiviseen kanjoniin, jonka mittasuhteita oli hankala tajuta edes ´livenä´, saatikka sitten valokuvissa!

(picture 47) The road following the south rim offered many great views into the massive Canyon. The dimensions were hard to comprehend, even when you were there, nevermind from the photos!

(kuva 48) Bongasimme tien päällä näin erikoisen ´rekkajunan´.

(picture 48) On the road we spotted this weird ´truck-train´.

Kartta LA > Seattle > Las Vegas. (Map LA > Seattle > Las Vegas)

Lähdettyämme matkaan Los Angelesista syyskuun 16. päivänä matkallamme oli loistavat ilmat aina siihen asti, kun saavuimme Seattleen (29.9). Sitten kelipuoli teki äkkiä täyskäännöksen, ja alueelle tuli aikainen talvi, joten ´pakenimme´ takaisin Kalifornian lämpöön, ja jatkoimme Las Vegasiin, jonne saavuimme 7.10.

Starting off from Los Angeles on September 16th, we had simply perfect weather until Seattle, where we arrived on September 29th. Then it all suddenly turned around, and the area got an early winter, so we ´escaped´ back to the warmth of California, and continued on to Las Vegas, arriving there on October 7th.

9. lokakuuta (9th October) 2009

(picture 35) We continued our journey east from Las Vegas. The oncoming Harley-Davidson, with a large windscreen, was among the most popular bikes seen on the road in the US, and surely it must be a good choice for the big, long highways. The Suzuki we are riding with, has an engine capacity of less than half compared to the Harley, but it does surprisingly well, even when touring 2-up. Many 650cc bikes would feel a lot more exhausted.
The stock USA-version windscreen, that can be seen on the photo, has received a lot of complaints saying it creates ´buffeting´ to the rider´s and passenger´s helmets. Fearing this, we took our own low sport-screen with us from Europe, but never felt the need to change it. Our most common travel speed on the interstates was about 75 mph according to our speedo, and highest continuous speeds were about 85-95 mph. Despite our soft sidebags, the DL650 was fully stable even at those speeds, only gusty sidewinds could cause some small disturbance.

(kuva 36) Auringon polttamia kasveja keskellä kuivaa ja puutonta aavikkoa.

(picture 36) Some sunburn plants in the middle of the dry, treeless desert.

(kuva 37) Tauolla Lake Meadin tekojärvellä, joka on syntynyt Colorado-jokeen Hooverin padon taakse. Vuoristokanjonissa mutkittelevalla järvellä on kokonaispinta-alaa yli 600 neliökilometriä, ja pituutta lähes 200km.

(picture 37) A break on the shores of Lake Mead, which has been created behind the Hoover Dam on the Colorado-river. The lake meanders in a mountain canyon, it has a surface area of almost 300 square miles, and is nearly 120 miles long.

(kuva 38) Mahtavan Colorado-joen Hoover-pato kapeassa Black Canyonissa.

(picture 38) The Hoover Dam in narrow Black Canyon of the mighty Colorado River. The dimensions do not really come through from the photo, as the dam is over 700 ft high, and when completed in 1936, it was the largest concrete structure, as well as the biggest electric-power station in the world. Because of drought, water level in Lake Mead behind the dam was much below normal. The road went across the edge of the dam, and we also saw one of the water-running tunnels right next to it, it was dry though, but still looked like ´the gates of Hell´!

(kuva 39) Arizona on pinta-alaltaan noin 90% verrattuna Suomen vastaavaan.

(picture 39) Arizona´s surface area is about 90% of that of Finland. It joined the union in 1912, as the last one of the continental 48 states. The red and yellow naturally symbolize the sunset, but also the original 13 counties of the state. Copper mining has been important in the region for a long time, so there´s a copper-colored star in the middle of the flag.

(picture 40) A patriotic poster on the outer wall of a shop in the small town of Williams. The country is currently involved in two separate wars, so the subject is a topical and delicate one. Here support is given separately to the army, the navy, the marine corps, the air force and the coast guard.

(kuva 41) Williamsin kylänraitille oli kyhätty myös pieni ´villinlännen kylä´, jonne vesitynnyrin päällä istuva nukke houkutteli turisteja heiluttelemalla kättään.

(picture 41) Along Williams´ main street, there was also a small ´Wild West Village´, and this figure, sitting on top of the water tank, tried to attract tourists to come over by waving its hand.

7-8 lokakuuta (7-8 Oct) 2009

(kuva 25) Howard Johnson Inn:istä Las Vegasissa saimme melko tasokkaan huoneen ällistyttävän edullisesti. Kaupungin lukemattomat kasinot houkuttelevat turisteja niihin törsäämään rahojaan, joten majoitus on erittäin halpaa. Taustalla maailmankuulun pääkadun eli ´Stripin´ pohjoispäässä kohoava 350-metrinen Stratosphere-torni samannimisen kasinon kupeessa.

(picture 25) We got a nice room stunningly cheap from the Howard Johnson Inn in Las Vegas. The city is filled with casinos, that want to get as many tourists as possible to spend their money in them, so accommodation is dirt cheap. On the background you can see the Stratosphere-tower, which is 350 meters high, and lies at the northern end of the world famous main road, ´The Strip´ next to a casino with the same name.

(kuva 26) Kyltti, joka toivottaa tervetulleeksi Las Vegasin keskustaan. Keskusta kuitenkin sijaitsee tästä pohjoiseen, kun taas kaupungin tunnetuin nähtävyys, ´The Strip´, tästä etelään.

(picture 26) A sign welcomed us to downtown Las Vegas, which is north from the sign. The most famous part of the city, however, is ´The Strip´, and it is south from here.

(picture 27) Stratosphere Casino on our evening walk at the Las Vegas ´Strip´. It is the only scenic highway in the US - after dark! Temperature in the evening was about 20-22 C, and desert air is usually not very humid, so it was a perfect temperature to walk dressed on a t-shirt. We did walk, too - at least 6-7 kilometers during the evening!

(picture 28) Las Vegas is ´the entertainment capital of the world´, but also ´the wedding capital´. You can get the required permits without waiting period from an office that´s open every day from 9 am to midnight. The city is filled with small wedding chapels (our motel also had one). Also the way the ceremony is held, is fully up to you, if you want, you can have an Elvis impersonator handle it, for example!

(picture 29) The famous ´Strip´ is for many miles littered with enormous hotel-casino complexes, each built into its own theme, and there are shows according to the theme shown in front of them. ´Treasure Island´ was fronted by a large pool of water, with this ship floating on it, and we saw sword-armed pirates and scantily clad dancer-ladies perform a humoristic pirate-show on its deck and ropes. The front of the casino was filled with a huge crowd that had come to see it. And everything is big in America; the water pool was big enough to hide another ´ghost ship´ of same size under the surface, and it rose up during the show.

(kuva 30) Sisänäkymä eräästä kasinosta, joita kaupungissa on kymmeniä. Silmänkantamattomiin peliautomaatteja, ja ruletti-, blackjack- tai pokeripöytiä. Tämän kasinon aulassa oli esillä maukkaasti rakennettu show-harrikka (jolla ajaminen tosin ei taitaisi onnistua).

(picture 30) An inner view to one of the dozens of casinos in the city. There are seemingly endless rows of slot machines and roulette-, blackjack- or poker tables. In the entrance to this casino, there was a nicely built Harley on show. Did not look like it is meant to be ridden, though.

(picture 31) You cannot blame the Las Vegas hotel-casinos for being too modest, that´s for sure! Here is the entrance to ´Caesar´s Palace´, and the whole complex spread out to roughly a half square-mile area!

(picture 32) A view to the south on the busy ´Strip´. We had walked for miles on the warm evening to get here, and the road just went on and on... luckily we were able to get back to the motel on a double-decker bus. There is also a monorail-train as public transport.

(picture 33) Naturally ´The King of Rock n´Roll´ and Marilyn were also having an evening stroll along the ´Strip´...

(picture 34) In general, everything that is old and European, seemed to be held in high value in the US. So it was not a big surprise, that from Las Vegas, you can even find its own ´Venice´, with the canals and gondols transporting tourists.
